I have been wanting to update my design studio for quite some time and my biggest dilemma has been the desk. I love the desk I have but it is just not practical. It’s a corner desk (L-shaped) but the way the supports are made, I cannot put any drawer system, shelves or cabinets underneath… and I could really use the storage spage. I have been scouring Ikea and haven’t been totally happy with what I have seen so far. Since I consider myself to be quite the “junker” and recycler I thought I could find some things to re-purpose, and maybe even use the glass that’s on my desk. Enter the door desk:

This idea came from a site called theinspiredroom.net. I just love it! I have always loved the sawhorse legs too, although I’m still not sure it makes it very practical for storage. I may just get some simple wooden or metal legs from Ikea to screw on to the door, or maybe I will make some simple cubby shelves. This also depends on the width of the doors I can find. I had some great ones that were narrow, but we just put them in the guest room to make a headboard and I refuse to take them because I love where they are (I’ll post a picture soon). I am thinking that a trip to the Re-Store this weekend may be in order.

Isn’t it awesome? I’m in love with it.

Since David travels so much, he often brings home tons and tons of soap and toiletries. We use them, but we also have so many that we don’t know what to do with them, often giving them to family and friends that want them. When I saw these finds on eBay I knew they were perfect for organizing all the millions of soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. I think these will be great in the guestroom to put out so that our guests can choose any kind of soap or toiletries they like.

The same seller also had matching canisters for coffee, tea and sugar. I have been wanting to get a small coffee pot for the guest room and these are perfect to put close by so that our guests can feel right at home with a nice cup of joe or tea. Now I just have to get a few comfy bath robes and towels and the room will be ready for all of our guests.

We also have a few wood doors that we got at the ReStore to make a headboard out of (this was a while back). We got three doors for $36 and I can’t wait to complete the project. I have seen this multiple times online and in magazines and it makes for a stunning headboard. I have the old metal frame from my iron canopy bed that we are recycling to hold the matresses (the canopy itself kinda fell apart after a few years). I also have a vintage, white chippy ladder that my mom had and gave me (because I wanted it). I plan to hang blankets or towells off of it.

Now, if I could just get motivated to go finish painting the trim and furniture in that room I’ll be all set.

I am getting a little addicted to junk… ya know, stuff from antique/vintage stores, stuff on ebay that people don’t want, yard sale finds, etc. I thought I would post my recent kitchen junk because it makes me happy.

This is probably my favorite find from eBay:

I purchased the letters separately for $7.99 a piece. They measure 10″ high and actually have a darker patina that what’s shown in the shop keeper’s photo. They are very cool and any kind of letters that size go for a hefty price so it was a good deal. I put them above the kitchen cabinets and the bottom gets a little lost so I will have to hang them eventually… now it looks like it says FAT because you can’t see the bottom of the “E”. I will take a picture when I figure out exactly where to hang it.

I also got some vintage graters that I attached to the side of the cabinet near the kitchen sink… it hold my towels. These came from eBay at a total of $3 for the lot.You can see it in the picture of my kitchen down further.

And this little baby came from my favorite little vintage store, the Village Emporium, and it was only $8. It’s an old pulley of sorts… I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet but for now it hangs on the hook near the sink. Something about this little find really makes me happy… Maybe it’s just the feel of the old wood paired with the old iron at the top. Anyway, I like being able to see it in the kitchen when I wash dishes. Eventually, maybe I’ll hang it from the ceiling with a planter or something. I just love the old feeling of it… how could you not? It’s heavier than the dickens though, and a pretty good size! You can see a picture of my kitchen sink area below and see that it’s hanging off to the left.

I also got these cool iron scrolly things at the Village Emporium for above my window (and you can see my grater towell hanger and pulley, as well as my newly sewn curtain). I think it adds a nice touch to the country style kitchen feeling I am after… now if only I could get the cabinets painted. That will have to be a project for another day though because we have enough to do. And I have already scoped out my butcher block counter topys from IKEA… me want badly!

And here’s my finished sewn curtains for the breakfast nook:

I still may add a bottom valence that hangs down from the center, covering more of the window, but for now at least there is something. I think I did a pretty good job for my second attempt at sewing. And what’s even better is that I got the fabric clearanced at Hancock Fabrics for $3.50 a yard. It was down to $7 and they had it 50% off… and originally it was Waverly which means it was probably $20+ a yard. I believe the fabric is called “Window Plaid” but it hard to find… the only other place I could find it was on eBay HERE and it’s $9.95/yd. plus shipping.

David and I have started remodeling the bathroom downstairs and even though it is not done, it is looking FABULOUS!

We chose a light olive green color for the walls and we are in the process of putting up beadboard. We made our own high floor-boards and still need to add the rail. The original toilet needed to be replaced and we found this Kohler elongated bowl toilet at the Re-Store for $75. We cleaned it up (although it looked new) and bought a new seat and hardware for it. We also got a Kohler cast iron sink for $25 that we will install when we figure out the cabinet. The little tie curtain is from Target and I just adore it. All the colors really reminded me of a garden, so this is going to be our garden bathroom. The little white flower pots and artifical flowers/grass were things I had, but really bring in the garden theme nicely. We also got a nice big wooden frame at the Re-Store for $5 (not pictured). I have given it a white-wash and distressed it and just need to cut the big-ass wall-mounted mirror that was hanging in here to fit… talk about recycling. We also got 2 more frames the same size for $15 a piece that we want to stain and insert mirrors into for the upstairs bathroom… I think I can get all three mirrors cut from just the glass that was in here. Sometimes I am pretty darn crafty and thrifty at the same time! This alone will save $100+.

 Â

And the little basket holding the TP is also from the Re-Store that they gave us for free… and I was totally willing to pay the $3 they had on it! Who am I to argue?

Since we are working on this room, I have gotten really excited to get stuff for it. Since most of our money is going into renovations, I can’t spend a lot, but since I am really getting into Junk Market finds, I figured I would browse e-Bay to see what I could find and re-purpose. This is probably my favorite find and I cannot wait to get it:

This old handcrafted wheelbarrow with four sections in the middle is 21″ long and 6.5″ tall. I paid a whole $3.99 for it (with $9 shipping). I think I will probably give it a white wash so it will match the bathroom and put the TP in it… or maybe it will go on the new counter (when we figure out what we want) and add plants or something.

And the there’s this… do you know what it is? Don’t worry, I’ll wait for you to get a better look.

It’s an old vintage little ashtray made of cast iron. Now, I’m not all that fond of it the way it is now, but with some white paint and sealer this will become the soap holder next to the sink. I paid $10 for it, but it’s perfect (or it will be when I refinish it).

And my last find for the bathroom are these hooks:

Originally I thought we could hang the monogrammed “D” towells that I got from my shower (many moons ago) on an old drawer pull, but David thought it would look weird. I found these little hooks for $5 and thought they were cute and go great with the gardening stuff.

I think that makes this bathroom pretty complete, although I have an idea for some artwork to hang. I also thought it would be cute to hang some sort of birdhouse in here, since the ceilings are so high… but I don’t want to get too crazy with the theme so we’ll have to see.

I’ll post more of my recent finds later, as well as updated photos when we get them. Happy junking!

David and I both fell in love with this rack. We got it 20% off for $48 and planned to use it above the toilet in the master bath… alas, it did not fit in the alotted spot. Note to self: bring tape measure and know the size of the area prior. We plan on hanging it near the tub and think it will be beautiful. It has some rust, so we need to get rid of that but I love the shabby-chikiness of the patina.

This little beauty was only $35 bucks! I plan to mount it to the shed out back and put some plants in it.

I have a plan for this one, and it’s not mashing potatoes. I saw something in my JunkMarket book I want to try.

At a yard sale we found this… even though this is a little gaudy as is, refinished with paint and new knobs (and we’ll probably add a back) it will make a great accent piece somewhere in the house (price: $10). The front is hinged and opens to reveal shelves inside. It is not something I would have looked at twice normally, but for $10, why not?

At the same yard sale, we found a Black & Decker Power Mitre Saw so we can do our own trims, etc. in the house (price: $20).

And at the antique place we found this wonderful bench that everyone in the place was jealous about when we walked up with it (price: $35 – a real steal). We’ll probably recover the pad.

And I fell in love with this plant holder… it is probably the only thing I paid more than I should have for, but I love it (price: $26).

And everyone knows how I am with frogs, so when I found a front door knocker so cheap I had to have it ($7.50).

And then I liked this plant holder shelf, which needs to be painted (price: $6).
