I read.. then join the library
September 16th, 2009 Posted in Reading RoomI haven’t posted much lately, and it’s probably because I’ve been reading like crazy! I finished the three book series “His Dark Materials Omnibus” by Philip Pullman about two weeks ago and I really enjoyed it! For what is considered to be kid’s fiction (although so is Harry Potter), it was a very interesting story about religious controversies and strange new worlds. I thought it was fascinating.
About I week ago, I moved on to “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. WOW! I couldn’t put the book down and read it pretty quick… allowing me to finally watch the movie on HBO last night which followed pretty true to the book (for the most part). I didn’t even realize it was a movie until I was already reading the book, and luckily for me I didn’t have to go to the movies to see it or pay to rent it.
Since I have been reading so much this year, and with trying to cut back on spending, I finally decided to join the library. The nice thing about our library system here is that you get a key tag for a library card to put on your key chain and now everything is done over computers! So when I want a book, I look online and put it on hold from the comfort of my own home (or wait on the waiting list, which is often the case). They get it from their stock or from another location near by (with like 15 to choose from) and e-mail me to come and pick them up at my local branch. It couldn’t be better! I am loving it! So I went last Friday and got two books, “The Friday Night Knitting Club” by Kate Jocobs and “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. I breezed through the “Friday Night Knitting Club” in a matter of days and just loved it… and of course I cried (always the sign of a good book). I am also about 100 pages into “A Thousand Splendid Suns” and it is coming along pretty well. I have the sequel to Friday Knight Knitting Club on reserve and should be getting it in any day, as well at the Kite Runner, which is also by Khaled Hosseini. And it’s a good thing I’m into reading because you only get to keep the books for three weeks! That doesn’t seem like a lot of time, really. Good thing most books I am reading now are only about 400 pages and only take me a few days to a week to complete.
I’m really trying to speed my way through the one I’m on now though because I pre-ordered and received my new Dan Brown book, “The Lost Symbol.” I am so excited to read it! I also got “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult used on Amazon, which I plan to read after if my other books from library aren’t in yet. I would have waited in the library for “My Sister’s Keeper,” but due to the popularity from the movie there were 184 requests before me to read it. I didn’t want to wait that long. I am also one of 162 people in line to read “Julie & Julia” by Julie Powell. I guess that’s what happens when a movie is made from a book, which most are.
So for now I am straying from my reading list, although to be honest I have made a pretty good dent in the darn thing. I’ve read more books this year than I think I ever have. For once I can say I followed through on a New Year’s Resolution.
