Junk Finds for the Downstairs Bathroom

February 10th, 2009 Posted in Junk Finds

David and I have started remodeling the bathroom downstairs and even though it is not done, it is looking FABULOUS!

We chose a light olive green color for the walls and we are in the process of putting up beadboard. We made our own high floor-boards and still need to add the rail. The original toilet needed to be replaced and we found this Kohler elongated bowl toilet at the Re-Store for $75. We cleaned it up (although it looked new) and bought a new seat and hardware for it. We also got a Kohler cast iron sink for $25 that we will install when we figure out the cabinet. The little tie curtain is from Target and I just adore it. All the colors really reminded me of a garden, so this is going to be our garden bathroom. The little white flower pots and artifical flowers/grass were things I had, but really bring in the garden theme nicely. We also got a nice big wooden frame at the Re-Store for $5 (not pictured). I have given it a white-wash and distressed it and just need to cut the big-ass wall-mounted mirror that was hanging in here to fit… talk about recycling. We also got 2 more frames the same size for $15 a piece that we want to stain and insert mirrors into for the upstairs bathroom… I think I can get all three mirrors cut from just the glass that was in here. Sometimes I am pretty darn crafty and thrifty at the same time! This alone will save $100+.

And the little basket holding the TP is also from the Re-Store that they gave us for free… and I was totally willing to pay the $3 they had on it! Who am I to argue?

Since we are working on this room, I have gotten really excited to get stuff for it. Since most of our money is going into renovations, I can’t spend a lot, but since I am really getting into Junk Market finds, I figured I would browse e-Bay to see what I could find and re-purpose. This is probably my favorite find and I cannot wait to get it:

This old handcrafted wheelbarrow with four sections in the middle is 21″ long and 6.5″ tall. I paid a whole $3.99 for it (with $9 shipping). I think I will probably give it a white wash so it will match the bathroom and put the TP in it… or maybe it will go on the new counter (when we figure out what we want) and add plants or something.

And the there’s this… do you know what it is? Don’t worry, I’ll wait for you to get a better look.

It’s an old vintage little ashtray made of cast iron. Now, I’m not all that fond of it the way it is now, but with some white paint and sealer this will become the soap holder next to the sink. I paid $10 for it, but it’s perfect (or it will be when I refinish it).

And my last find for the bathroom are these hooks:

Originally I thought we could hang the monogrammed “D” towells that I got from my shower (many moons ago) on an old drawer pull, but David thought it would look weird. I found these little hooks for $5 and thought they were cute and go great with the gardening stuff.

I think that makes this bathroom pretty complete, although I have an idea for some artwork to hang. I also thought it would be cute to hang some sort of birdhouse in here, since the ceilings are so high… but I don’t want to get too crazy with the theme so we’ll have to see.

I’ll post more of my recent finds later, as well as updated photos when we get them. Happy junking!
