NEW MOON: Okay, I’m OBSESSED now

Filed under: Reading Room — Erin @ 4:22 pm

I thought it would take me at least until the end of the weekend to read New Moon (the Twilight sequel by Stephanie Meyer)… dead wrong! I was so enthralled in it that I finished it last night (was it 4 days?) and I’m already over 100 pages into the third book. And now November 20th can’t come fast enough. Why? Because that’s when then movie comes out and I keep watching the trailer and getting goosebumps! I CAN’T WAIT! You’ll have to GO HERE to see, as YouTube has disabled sharing on it. I guess the new Harry Potter movie in July will tide me over for a bit though… the Twilight series is just as addicting though!

David’s not really happy with me for finishing it without him because he really enjoys it too! But there was no way I could wait to keep reading… and then, well… I just got sucked into it. BUT, he did say that now he may have to read it himself! SUCCESS (maybe)!!! I’ve been trying to get him into reading for so long and he’s not all that fond of it. Maybe this will break him in… not to mention that a guy who reads is so damn sexy (yeah, I know… I have problems).

If you haven’t gotten into this series yet, DO! I’m a sucker for vampire-related stories anyway, but it’s a modern day Romeo and Juliet, which they also reference quite a bit in the book, and it will have you facinated… I hate to admit it, but I actually cried too. Stephanie Meyer writes so clearly about emotions that you feel everything the characters do (well, or at least I did).

I’ll probably post in another few days when I finish the next one… or maybe I just won’t sleep tonight. Hmmm…

Reading Updates

Filed under: Reading Room — Erin @ 11:32 am

Well, it took me a while but I finished “Three Cups of Tea.” It was a good story, but it didn’t hold my interest… maybe it’s because I didn’t like it told in the third-person point of view, which makes it difficult to follow at times… I don’t know. Anyway, I like what the book stands for and it is a touching story. After I finished it a week ago, I picked up “Angels & Demons” so I can go see the movie after I finish. All I can say is, “WOW!” I started reading it last Thursday and I finished it by Sunday. Hopefully David and I will go see the matinee this weekend and I can’t wait, although I have a feeling that it won’t live up to the book (the movies never do). And I am so excited for his next book coming out September 15, “The Lost Symbol.”

So now I am back on my “Twilight” series with the second book “New Moon.” I’m already 200 pages into the 550+ pg. book and I can’t wait to go home each night and read more. Even David loves it… I have to read it to him every night out loud or catch him up if I do any reading on my own. This is sort of a pain in the butt, but I’m hoping that at some point he’ll realize he can read it too.

And I am happy to report that I am kicking some major butt on the reading front! My goal was 12 books this year (basically 1 per month). Well, it’s June and if I finish New Moon (which I’m pretty sure I will by the end of the weekend) then I’ll have read 10 books and I’m only half way through the year. I wish I could do this every year and then I’ll have read all of the 200+ book I want to read. To be honest, I’m surprised I have found the time… but even if it’s just one chapter a night then I get somewhere. Pretty soon I’m going to have to add even more books to my list in the sidebar (which I have done here and there).

Anybody else reading anything interesting? Nobody has commented in a while… leave your thoughts.

World of Goo Gameplay Trailer #1

If you haven’t gotten this game for your Wii yet, GO GET IT! It’s so awesomely obsessive! When I bought it and first started playing it, David was like, “What the hell is this? It looks stupid.” Yeah, until he watched me play one board and then he wanted to try. We have been addicted and (unfortunately) finished the game in just a few days… sigh. I am hoping that the creators will come out with another one because it was just too fun and we are left wanting MORE GOO!!! I guess you can also buy it for the computer with possible add-ons, but I want to keep it for the Wii. This game is so fantastic that I don’t know why they don’t release it into an actual game format in the stores (it’s that good). You can check out more about it here: http://www.worldofgoo.com/

Been so busy, but got in the gardens

Filed under: Gardening — Erin @ 12:11 pm

I cannot tell you how busy I’ve been lately, and it’s been rather difficult to find time for anything but I did manage to get in my two square foot gardens (above-ground, sized 4′x4′) over the last two weekends (while battling the constant rain here, which David and got caught in one day). I was going to wait this year, because we don’t have the time/money to install a fence around it (due to the naughty pooch), but I found a cheap way to make a little cover out of chicken wire to keep Brenner out. Everything I’ve been doing is straight out of the All New Square Foot Gardening book by Mel Bartholomew. Last weekend I got in the first garden, using pre-started plants from Lowes. It was a little too late to do peppers and tomatoes from seed. Here’s what the first garden looks like:

I would have liked to make this the “salsa” garden, but I had plants that needed to get in the ground and we didn’t have the second garden frame complete yet. The only seeds sowed were the beans seeds, which are already sprouting, and one of the squares of basil (the other I bought). My tomatoes in the garden were supposed to include a cherry tomato, but by accident I put those back, so I had to buy some for the other garden (I now have extra tomatoes that need to go in pots… this was not how I planned this and I will have way too many tomatoes if they all do well).

The second garden is almost all by seed, except the cherry tomatoes:

I have never grown lettuce, cukes, beets, or spaghetti squash but figured that I would give it a whirl. I’ve heard that cilantro does horrible here, but thought I’d still try for David’s sake (he cooks a lot with it and I use it in salsa). I also think I may have some trouble with the squash because they take up so much room, but I figure I’ll see this year and learn. So far everything is doing well and I should know soon how the seeds go. We are super excited about this, especially since everything that vines we are growing up on trellis’ (yes, even the canteloup). I have a little area behind these gardens where I planted two of the extra canteloup plants, and I bought some pumpkin and gourd mixed that will go there too (also to be grown on a trellis). Yesterday we also bought and cut some re-mesh (concrete reinforceing wire) to make some square tomato cages and a trellis from… we still need to get more, but they seem much sturdier (and cheaper) than what I’ve seen on the market. I’ll have to take a picture soon.

Next year, if we get the picket fence in, I’ll keep the veggies in the garden and hang some window boxes on the fence for the herbs. I’ll also move the compost pile to something a little more practical inside the fenced area (right now I’m just using a big trash can and the process is a little too slow, although I used some anyway.
